Open Your Third Eye with Indigo

At the center of your forehead is where the Third Eye Chakra is located.  This is the gateway to greater insight and realization and is the focus of this post in a series about the seven major chakra centers.

Of all of the chakras, the Third Eye is likely the one most recognized by name.  Also known as the brow chakra, this 6th energy center is related to the ability to see — both physically and intuitively.  When healthy and balanced  it enables a greater spiritual understanding and can also enhance awareness and psychic abilities.

Following are some signals that your brow chakra is out of balance:

  • Difficulty using your imagination and visualizing your desires
  • Unable to determine a purpose for your life
  • Feeling disconnected from your inner self/voice
  • Experiencing headaches and/or having trouble with your eyes
  • Having trouble sleeping and/or remembering your dreams

This is a very important energy center to pay attention to.   Being able to withdrawal into your inner self allows you to obtain a peace and freedom to break through boundaries.  To assist you in opening your third eye, following are a number of practices you can integrate into your life:

Color Therapy:

Indigo is the color associated with the Third Eye.  Think of the color of a cloudless blue sky at midnight.  Rich, deep, and profound, Indigo helps to turn energy inward.  Use this color in your life to find peace and to encourage personal reflection.  Night is an ideal time to take out a few minutes for meditation.  If the sky is clear, spend some time outside simply gazing upward into depths of space.  Really focus on the quality of the indigo color above and let it sedate your mind and open your awareness.  Bring more of this color into your life, both in your home and your wardrobe.

Essential oils are very balancing for the brow chakra.  Some suggestions for this chakra are: Jasmine, Juniper, Lemon, Pine, Anise, or Violet.  Make sure that the oil(s) you select are appealing to your own personal senses.  You can place a few drops on an aroma lamp, add a few drops (mixed with jojoba or almond oil) into your bath, or add several drops to massage oil.

Lapis, Azurite, Sodalite, Blue Sapphire, Opal, and Blue Tourmaline are all stones that are ideal for the third eye.  Look for stones with a dark blue or a violet color and go with your intuition when making a selection.  You can wear the stone on a chain or hold it in your hands throughout the day.  For a wonderful third-eye opener, lie on your back and place the stone on your forehead, between your eyes.  Meditate on the energy at your forehead and try to feel the stone’s metaphysical properties assisting your chakra center.

Dream Work:

I am amazed with the depth of insight and information that can be tapped into by analyzing the dreams that come to us as we sleep.  So quickly dismissed and forgotten by most all of us, our dreams can feel like a complete mystery and take a lot of effort to recall, write out, and reflect upon.  Taking the time to pay attention to our dreams, however, is among the most powerful ways to tap into your inner guide’s wisdom and make tremendous strides in understanding your deepest beliefs and life lessons.  An incredible array of information is available to learn about dream work.  I recommend that you get a book that not only provides a dream dictionary of symbols, but that also has information on journaling, setting goals for your dream work, and explores various types of dreams.  One of my favorite dream-related book is ‘The Mystical Magical Marvelous World of Dreams’ by Wilda B. Tanner.

Listen to Your Intuition:

If you just pay attention to the signals and insights that come to you in everyday situations, you’ll find that you naturally know more than you may think.  Next time you think about someone out of the blue, pick up the phone and call them.  You’ll very likely hear the words, “I was just thinking of you.”  If you get a flash of insight that you should not be doing something that you are about to, then listen to that feeling.  You’ll probably discover soon why you were best to avoid that situation.  If something feels good and right, then it probably is the right thing to do.  When you encounter a stranger and you sense a discomfort or shot of fear related to that person, then don’t dismiss that feeling.  By trusting our inner guide and believing that the jolts of awareness that come to us are worthy of paying attention to, you will find that you are steering yourself in a better direction and avoiding pitfalls.  You’ll also discover, over time and with practice, what the sensations are of true intuition versus random thoughts.  Paying close attention to your “gut feelings,” and trusting your insights is the key to unlocking the incredible power that comes from your Third Eye energy center.

Live each day colorfully…
